Our Verdict

The Peak Design Everyday performs great and looks great. It has a large-capacity main compartment and a handful of features that caught our attention. With a magnetic latch at the top, it's easy to open and close. It has a separate, well-protected laptop slot that can accommodate two computers. One of our favorite features is the three adjustable velcro compartments that allow for maximum flexibility to create a bag that can hold exactly what you need it to. This pack also looks good. Though it is definitely a pricey product, office commuters, photographers, and grad students alike will love this model.

Laptop Protection

This backpack comes outfitted with top-tier protection. The laptop slot is set against the back of the pack. It has two sides, separated by a fabric divider. The slot is tight enough that it holds a laptop securely. It doubles down with a suspension system that adjusts to fit 13" and 15" laptops to keep them raised off of the bottom of the pack so even if you do drop it hard, the electronics won't take the brunt of the impact.

The exterior pack also has a noticeable amount of rigidity. This extra structure protects equipment from knocks and bumps. Inside the main compartment, three adjustable horizontal 'shelves' have stiff padding and flexible sides that can crimp up to surround specialized equipment like cameras and lenses.

One note is that many of the pocket closures rely on magnets, including the main flip-top lid, the two exterior water bottle pockets, two interior pockets in the main compartment, and the straps, which stow against the back via magnet when you're not carrying the pack. We never had any issues during testing and the pack is specifically designed for carrying technology, but if you plan to carry a device that could be sensitive to magnets, keep this in mind.

Comfort

Even with how stiff it is, the Everyday is still comfortable all day. This is even more surprising given that it also doesn't have much cushion against the back like other packs do. It relies on wide, moderately padded straps to disperse weight across the shoulders. The straps also have a pivot point at the top that enables them to sit naturally on a wider range of shoulder sizes.

It also comes outfitted with a sternum strap for additional security and support while in transit, as well as a flap on the backside that can easily slide over a suitcase handle for easy airport travel.

Storage

The storage options of this pack are excellent. With a total capacity of 30L, it's very spacious. Its laptop pocket can hold two 15" devices if necessary. Photographers will especially like this model; its substantial main compartment is equipped to carry multiple cameras and lenses. Each of the adjustable shelves is also crimpable to customize the interior even more. The flip-top opening can be closed at several different levels, which enables you to 'overstuff' the pack and still keep items secure.

If photography isn't your thing, then that extra space can be used for a full lunch, notebooks, or other electronic devices. It has a nice complement of smaller pockets as well. The laptop slot has multiple shallow but stretchy pockets that can hold earbuds, a mouse, or other accessories. The main compartment has two zippered and two magnet closure pockets down the side for chargers, a phone, pens, and other items.

Both sides of the pack are fully unzippable to provide easy access to the lower shelves without having to remove everything through the top. Two exterior water bottle pockets are stretchy enough to hold larger-diameter bottles. We also appreciate the two adjustable straps on the outside that make it possible to attach a bike helmet or other item that might not fit on the inside.

Ease of Use

The accessibility of the main compartment through three points of entry make this pack easy to use. It is a flip-top bag with sides that completely unzip. In addition, the magnetic latch means that the bag closes pretty securely on its own, with the option to hook it more tightly.

For those who are concerned about carrying around so much equipment on a commute, the side zippers come with loops that connect to the main body of the pack. It's by no means a rock-solid security system, but it's enough that you would feel it if someone tried to pull it while the pack was on your back and it prevents the pocket from opening accidentally.

Water Resistance

The Everyday is up to the task when it comes to bad weather. The exterior has durable water-repellent (DWR) protection. The hearty fabric is super resistant to nicks, scratches, and tears. All of this together means this model can take abuse from the elements while keeping its contents safe.

Though water doesn't bead and roll off especially well, it still stays on the surface. Even heavy rain doesn't penetrate through to the inside of the pack. The side zippers are waterproof as well, meaning that there aren't really any weak spots in terms of weather resistance. The bottom is a rubbery material that can be set down on a damp bench or table without absorbing moisture.

Style

This model is tailored to the office professional. It has a sleek and modern aesthetic with some premium accents, including a leather carrying strap. It looks simple from the outside but has a lot of user-friendly features underneath the lid.

One thing that might throw off some people is that it is quite large and we found that it can look a little bulky on smaller frames. The inner velcro shelves are completely removable, but even so, this pack is still one of the heavier options in the bunch. That said, we never really noticed the extra weight on our backs.

Should You Buy the Peak Design Everyday?

The Peak Design Everyday is for the daily commuter, office professional, and graduate student who still wants a modern look combined with the practicality of a backpack. It does almost everything very well. It has a lot of pockets and storage capacity, it protects electronics reliably, and it is easy to access anything you might stuff inside. With all of that in mind, it is very expensive, so it is really a backpack for people who are comfortable paying a lot more to get a top-of-the-line product.

What Other Models Should You Consider?

If you like the storage capacity of the Everyday, then the Matein Travel is also worth a look. It is significantly less expensive but can still hold multiple computers. For those who aren't into the modern, professional look and want a pack that can pass as a little more outdoorsy, the The North Face Borealis is the one for you. And if you want to match the quality of this pack, but just want another comparable option to consider, the Incase Icon is another great choice.
