Gray Grandy grew up in rural Vermont but followed his love of the mountains to the west coast for college. While working on his BS in Forest Ecology in Washington, he started coming to Tahoe in the winter to ski. After college, he delved into many facets of the outdoor rescue world. Winters are filled by a full-time professional ski patrol job at Kirkwood Mountain Resort. Summers have included teaching Technical Rope Rescue and Wilderness First Responder classes, wrenching at a bike shop, doing rope access construction projects, and commercial salmon fishing in Alaska. He also spent many years as a volunteer on the El Dorado County Search and Rescue team. For Gray, spring is the best time to take backcountry ski trips throughout the world before he fills his recreational time with mountain bikes on Tahoe's pristine trials for the summer and fall. He also appreciates a good rest day making food and splitting firewood as preparation for the next winter's wrath.

Motorola T600
The T600 has good range, is waterproof and floats, making it perfect for those that will bring it on the water.
Midland X-Talker 36
This radio finds the middle ground between small and inexpensive radios that lack power and features, and the larger, more expensive radios that have plenty of power and features.

Out of the smaller and less expensive radios we tested, this radio had better range but worse battery life than its direct competition.
Midland GXT1000VP4 Two Way
The respectable range and usability of this radio don't make up for its price, larger size, and poor battery life. Other radios are likely to fit your needs better
Motorola Talkabout T100
The Talkabout T100 is quite small, but is average or below average on all other fronts. For climbing and other activities where you'll stay relatively close, this model is adequate.
