Our Analysis and Test Results
Constructed entirely out of natural rubber with a thin textile lining, these boots have removable insoles and the classic buckle on the side. Being of mid-height, they offer a more low-key option for those who don't want rubber up to the knees.
Performance Comparison
Weather Protection
We measured the Molly to have a shaft height of 10.25 inches, which offers moderate protection against the elements as compared to taller, more traditional wellies. During our creek test, wading through the water was great until we moved too fast, and the weight of the water pushed on the flexible shaft, tilting the brim of the boot down enough for water to spill in. Thus, as long as you are careful, the height is certainly adequate for deep puddles. Still, the circumference of the boot opening measures 13.5 inches, which, depending on your calf size, might be wide enough to allow for rain to make its way in during a downpour.
Comfort
This pair weighed in at 3.12 lbs for the size 7 we tested. For their height, this is somewhat middle of the road: not necessarily heavy but also not technically lightweight. The rubber is thin and flexible, which means the shaft moves easily with the leg as you walk. There isn't noticeable arch support, which might tire the feet after a long day. Too, we noticed a popping sensation in the soles of boots, likely from a manufacturing defect. This certainly detracted from the overall comfort.
The sizing seems to be true to size, but there is a catch. When ordering from the Joules website, they display standard UK sizing, which is different from the US. So make sure you're paying attention to this and double-check their conversion chart; otherwise, you'll likely be ordering something much too big. With the right fit, these boots are easy to step into and slide out of, and for us, they offered above-average comfort for all casual needs.
Traction
Made on the more minimal side of the spectrum, the tread on the Molly is adequate but not rugged. Best for flat surfaces and mild inclines, they perform rather average across the board, lessening in stability when it comes to an icy deck or slimy river rock. We feel they are more than sufficient for urban and suburban environments to get you from point A to B. However, because the soles allow for some sensitivity, navigating rockier terrain isn't a guessing game, therefore allowing for more efficient use of the tread that they do have.
Warmth
Due to the fairly thin nature of the rubber and barely-there inner lining, there is no extra insulation to protect you from near-freezing temperatures in this boot. This is standard for a rain boot, as they are traditionally best for mild weather events, not icy blizzards. Having low relative warmth also means this pair is better used for those hotter summer thunderstorms or for doing light work in the garden. If you live in an area that rarely drops below 50 degrees, a boot like this is more versatile. Plus, you can always wear thicker socks if needed.
Style
At the time of this review, the Molly is available in more than a handful of fun, hand-drawn prints and color schemes. We find this to be really great and more customizable with personal preferences and a given wardrobe. While still on the more classic side of rain boots, with a molded design and accessory buckle, the rubber isn't overwhelming because of the prints. We also appreciate the feminine look of the heel and the low-profile footbox. Depending on the pattern you choose, these boots can be incredibly versatile. But be aware, the dyes in the lining bled onto our socks during our testing, so we resorted to only wearing dark-colored socks with them.
Fit
As mentioned previously, double-check that the sizes you're looking at on a website are US and not UK sizing. Overall, we feel they fit well and are easy to walk in. Not much heel lift and enough room for a modest variance in sock thickness. The Molly comes in US whole sizes 5-11.
Value
Their retail price is decent, not too expensive but also not necessarily cheap. For the style appeal and for how simple they are, they can be a great buy. But since we did encounter some defects in construction, we question their long-term quality.
Conclusion
The Joules Molly Mid is the classic mid-height wellie with a fun, modern twist. The hand-drawn designs are not only cute but unique. With simple, sufficient comfort, traction, and warmth, this pair checks all the boxes for rainwear.
