Our Verdict

The Maui Jim Honi are a great pair of women's sunglasses that we thoroughly enjoyed wearing. The high-quality lenses are polarized and provide excellent contrast and top-notch clarity for a very comfortable, protective experience. The frames have autolocking hinges and embedded rubber nose pads. Despite being rather heavy, the Honi feels excellently balanced and comfortable. They're a tad small, but bring great coverage and style to the table. The only real flaw is that the translucent frame sometimes catches the sun, creating intense glare. Still, we love the feel, look, and protection of these sunglasses.

Lens Quality

The HCL Bronze lenses we tested are made of crystal clear SuperThin glass that retains excellent clarity. The brown hue keeps things fairly true to color while highlighting brighter shades (particularly greens) as slightly brighter than they would otherwise look. It's not distractingly different though and adds contrast in a helpful way. The 12% Visible Light Transmission is a very comfortable level to wear, helping you see well in both bright and lower light situations.

Anti-reflective coating on the back does an excellent job mitigating reverse reflections. The Honi have the barest hint of a gradient, shading the top third of the lenses just a touch darker. This makes them even more comfortable for your eyes on truly bright days, yet is so subtle, it took a while to notice its effects. Though we didn't measure blue light blockage, Maui Jim claims their HCL Bronze lenses provide some level of "HEV reduction". Altogether, these are some of our favorite lenses to wear and look through, both for how expertly they shade and enhance the world and for their high level of eye comfort in challenging lighting.

Comfort

Though they are a Narrow width pair of sunglasses, the Honi are fairly accommodating to a wide range of head sizes. Shorter lens heights stop them from resting uncomfortably on the cheeks and the base curve keeps them from being plastered to the eyebrows. The Honi are one of the few pairs of women's sunglasses we tested that have flex hinges, allowing them to easily and comfortably expand as needed. Small embedded rubber nose pads add an extra level of comfort and security to the snug, yet agreeable, fit. Weighing 35 grams, they're some of the heaviest sunglasses we tested, and are a bit front-heavy, due to their glass lenses. They're well-balanced though, with long bows and a comfortably close fit that lets you forget the weight and just enjoy the experience of wearing them.

Flex hinges keep them comfortable and adaptable.

Style and Versatility

The Honi are "small but cute", as one tester fondly described them. They do a great job of splitting the difference between sporty and fashionable, though their color combos land them perhaps slightly on the side of more fashionable. They look best on smaller and narrower faces (including one interested 10 year old), but still looked pretty good on everyone in our lineup. We think that having slightly taller lenses would make them a little bit more versatile when it comes to fit. But all our testers liked wearing these, and our small-headed testers truly loved the fit.

Frame Quality

When it comes to materials, design, and build, the Honi are an exceptional pair of sunglasses. They're hefty and feel solid and durable. The rubber nose pads embedded into the plastic frame could be a little more cleanly cut and precisely attached, but compared to the many other glasses we tested, they're fantastic. The flex hinges are metal and feel sturdy and solid. They also autolock open and closed, adding to the ease of use of these pair of specs. Our only real complaint about the Honi frames is specific to the Sandstone with Blue color we tested. At certain angles heading toward the sun, the translucent blue on the bottom of the frame catches the light and magnifies it into a blinding glare just below the lenses. We're not sure if this also happens in the similarly translucent (though different colored) Sunset frames, but it's a shocking and painful flaw in an otherwise excellent pair of sunglasses.

Coverage

The base curve of 6 gives the Honi a very comfortable, face-hugging shape. As a Narrow pair of sunglasses, these small lenses obviously cover less than large ones would. Even on our slender-faced testers, the shortness of the lenses left some gaps along the bottom, but nothing too distracting. They're a very good fit, riding the line of both secure and snug while staying comfortable. The rubber nose pads add an extra level of security, particularly when your face gets hot and sweaty.

Case Quality

The Honi come with a trifold case that folds flat when empty, making it a great travel companion. Also included is a thin, medium-sized microfiber cleaning cloth.

Value

These sunglasses, though excellent, are far from cheap. That said, while there are a lot of great options that cost less, these are some of the most impressive of the bunch. They might not be the best fit or style for everyone, but if you adore the look and feel, rest assured that your money buys a very high level of quality and performance.

Conclusion

The Maui Jim Honi are a superb pair of sunglasses. They're designed to fit smaller faces, with a Narrow frame and smaller lenses, but do a great job accommodating many face sizes and shapes. They're not cheap, but they do offer top-notch performance and a high level of comfort and style.
