The GoPro HD Hero remains a great camera but we really encourage you to buy the GoPro HD Hero2, which is much better and the winner of our Editors' Choice Award. The Hero2 has better image quality, a better LCD screen, an 11mp camera, an external mic jack and only costs $60 more than the Original GoPro HD Hero. If money is super tight, we recommend the GoPro Hero 960 for the most savings or the Contour Roam. Check out our complete Helmet Cam Review to see how they compared.
The HD Hero is a versatile, durable camera that, once you get used to the scrolling LCD screen menu, is very easy to use. What we liked most about the GoPro is this ease of use which for us is defined as a combination of the simplicity of the mount system and the camera’s general durability. We don’t want to spend a lot of time tinkering with shots and fine-tuning the camera – we just want to stick it on and shoot. The GoPro’s mount system is simple, quick, versatile, and pretty tough. We could get ready for a shot quickly and easily almost anywhere, using some combination of adhesive foot, strap, or suction cup. That being said, some of the strap mounts that you can get (For instance, the “Head Strap”), are a joke if you’re actually moving much (the camera jitters like crazy).

OutdoorGearLab Editors' Hands-on Review
The fact that the GoPro is pretty much always inside its protective case is a blessing and a curse. We love the fact that you can drop it from almost any height and expect the camera inside to remain undamaged (GoPro cameras have survived several fatal BASE jumping accidents) but the fact that the case is always there means that you always have three lens surfaces to scratch and keep clean: on the camera, and then both sides of the case lens (admittedly not a big deal if you’re careful). Also, fogging inside of the case can be an issue – GoPro provides several solutions for this, but you need to plan ahead to use them.
Although the GoPro does not offer iOS/Android connectivity or live HDMI output, you can purchase an LCD piggy-back screen as an extra. This allows you to frame a shot or playback footage, important features when working on a serious project. Like the rest of the GoPro control navigation, using the piggy-back screen is not quite as smooth as a smartphone interface. The Hero2 will support smartphone connectivity in February 2012. Likes Durable, impact resistant, no configurations to worry about (just record modes), waterproof case standard, far more extra mounting options than any other camera, great price, 3D case compatibility, easy to clear memory card in the field (could be considered a “con” – be careful), Dislikes Battery life indicator: goes from three or four bars (out of four) to dead, seemingly without warning (usually in cold conditions). Adequately tightening screws on mount system extensions requires a screwdriver. The fact that it would be so easy for them to improve this makes it more annoying – all that’s needed is a more finger friendly plastic end (picture wingnuts) or they could provide a small and portable GoPro “key” to turn the screws). Figuring out the menu system – it feels archaic and, although simple, tricky to navigate, like a 1980s Casio watch with way too many features. Sound recording may be even worse than you would expect. GoPro Hero Packages GoPro HD Naked Hero ($200): just the housing and basic mount. GoPro HD Surf Hero ($230): one surfboard mount, one FCS mount. GoPro HD Motorsports Hero ($240): suction cup mount, many adhesive mounts. GoPro HD Helmet Hero ($240): flat helmet mounts, headband, vented helmet mount. GoPro Hero 960 ($150): The camera is different: 960p instead of 1080p. Comes with three mounts. GoPro Hero2 Packages GoPro HD Hero2 Outdoor Edition $300: flat helmet mounts, headband, vented helmet mount. GoPro HD Hero2 Surf Edition $300: two surfboard mounts, one FCS mount, floaty. GoPro HD Hero2 Motorsports Edition $300: suction cup mount, many adhesive mounts. Check out our complete Helmet Cam Review to see how the top helmet cams compare to each other.
