The Outdoor Research Radiant Hybrid is a well made, versatile, hooded fleece for active use in cold weather or as a stand alone piece in moderate, low wind conditions. Although the Radiant Hybrid is an excellent fleece we prefer the [Patagonia R1 Hoody]] because it's longer (can tuck into pants), has a more comfortable hood, is more breathable, and its chest pocket is easier to use. The Radiant Hybrid, however, is more durable and slightly cheaper. We believe the R1's advantages outweigh the Radiant's slightly more durable material and lower price.
Go for the Patagonia R2 Jacket if you want something warmer and something that looks better around town. If you’re going for aesthetics and the cozy factor get the Mountain Hardwear Money Man or for the “black North Face Jacket look” get the North Face Khumbu Jacket.

Pros: Lightweight, versatile, hood provides instant balaclava, breathable, more durable than the Patagonia R1 Hoody. Cons: Less breathable and shorter than Patagonia R1 Hoody, chin guard could be larger. Best Uses: Active cold weather pursuits: all types of climbing and backcountry skiing.

The Outdoor Research Radiant Hybrid Hoody is a high quality, versatile lightweight fleece jacket. It's highly breathable, super versatile, and excels in high output activities and fluctuating temperatures. The Radiant Hybrid's nearest competitor is the Patagonia R1 Hoody. Compared the R1 the Radiamnt Hybri poses two significant advantages: its face fabric is more durable, and it's cheaper. Dislikes Unfortunately, however, the R1 Hoody's design is more refined and better. (The R1 Hoody kicked off the lightweight hooded fleece revolution, of which the Radiant Hybrid is a new entry.) The R1 Hoody is more breathable, longer (for tucking into pants), has a slightly more comfortable hood closure, and has a faster and easier to use chest pocket zipper. The Radiant Hybrid is still an excellent fleece. We took the two head-to-head for alpine rock climbing in the Sierrra Nevada and ice and alpine climbing in New England. Both fleeces are great, but the R1 Hoody's advantages outweigh the Radiant's lower price. — Max Neale
