Overview
Since its introduction in 1982, the Whisperlite International has proven itself as the most versatile and dependable, lightweight, liquid fuel portable stoves on the market. If we were to have one stove, this would be it.

The International is a multi-fuel version of the MSR WhisperLite stove which won our Best Buy award. Featuring self-cleaning Shaker Jet™ technology, it burns white gas, kerosene, and unleaded auto fuel. The standard Whisperlite only burns white gas and is $10 less expensive. We generally just recommend the standard Whisperlite unless you really think you will be needing to burn kerosene or auto fuel.

OutdoorGearLab Editors' Hands-on Review

Likes
The Whisperlite’s design: simple and pure. Although it is unworthy of inclusion in the Times' Fashion section, it provides a stable three-legged base for a large central burner. MSR’s Shaker Jet allows you to clean the jet with a simple vertical shaking motion. The stove is controlled by a valve on the fuel pump, which sits 6-8” from the burner unit. Weighing in at 11.5 ounces, and taking up a very reasonable 96 cubic inches(1.5L), the Whisperlite is small and light enough to accompany you just about anywhere. This is the smallest and lightest liquid fuel stove we tested.

The Whisperlite is completely field maintainable. You can disassemble, repair, and reassemble the stove anywhere in the world.

Simple, reliable, and affordable, you can’t go wrong with the Whisperlite.

Dislikes
The Whisperlite does not light as fast as other stoves. The priming process involves releasing a small amount of fuel into the fuel cup, lighting it, and letting it burn down. This heats the fuel line enough to vaporize the fuel. The entire process takes roughly two minutes. While this isn’t instantaneous, we don’t think you’ll be late to your next appointment. Regardless of the make and model, this process is roughly the same for all liquid fuel stoves.

Some complain that the Whisperlite is incapable of simmering. Fortunately, however, this is not the case. The Whisperlite must be depressurized in order to achieve a constant simmer. Here’s how: prime, light, turn off, release fuel pressure, pump three times, and light again. We’ve made dozens of slowly simmered culinary delights with the Whisperlite. These include bread, pizza, calzones, and brownies.

Best Application
The Whisperlite International really can conquer it all.

Value
For $80 you cannot buy a better camp stove.

Other Versions
The very popular standard model MSR Whisperlite.

MSR also sells an MSR Whisperlite Service Kit, which includes all necessary parts and instructions to disassemble and repair a damaged Whisperlite. With this, your stove is likely to last for decades.

Bombproof MSR fuel bottles come in 11, 22, and 33 ounce sizes.

Dire. fuel hose too short- this makes it awkward to manoevre. priming is dangerous- far to easy to flare the stove before its primed properly, this causes everything within touching distance to get burned. the pump is a piece of crap, broke one and split the grey plastic collar on another. it burns really dirty and needs more cleaning than any other stove ive owned. ive now given mine away for free, i refused to take any money for it because its literally THAT bad. love my msr tent, their stoves are not great. for the love of god spend a bit more and get a Primus Omnifuel. metal pump and bullet proof. you can also burn anything even vaguely flammable cos you get 3 jet sizes to accomadate clean, moderate or viscous fuel like kerosene.

BUY THE PRIMUS.

Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this product to a friend.

I own both the original MSR GK (early 1980s model, still works fine) and a bit newer Whisperlite International. I would totally recommend the Whisperlite to any lightweight climber or backpacker. The stove has been with me to many places, sometimes using questionable fuels, and it never really failed me, ever. I do know how to take it apart and clean it, also have the complete repair kit with me on longer trips. The pump handle broke on me once, but now, I have a spare pump for extended trips as well. All in all, a wonderful product.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Great stove, no complaints. Easy to field maintain, but never needs it. Stable, strong pump and flame, simple to clean and fires up nearly 100% of the time with no issues. Compact, light and sets up in seconds.

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
